Paul Frerking Cause Of Death, Obituary: Beloved Norridge And Harwood Heights Coach Passes Away

The Norridge and Harwood Heights communities are mourning the loss of Paul “Ferk” Frerking, a beloved coach, respected official, dedicated educator, and true gentleman. His passing leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of his family, friends, former athletes, and colleagues. Coach Frerking was more than a leader on the field—he was a mentor, role model, and guiding force whose influence extended far beyond the games he coached and officiated.

For decades, Paul dedicated himself to athletics at the highest levels. A standout athlete at East Leyden High School, where he earned all-conference honors in both basketball and football, Paul went on to build an extraordinary career in 16-inch softball. Playing with renowned teams including the Amalga Monsters, Bobcats, Budweiser Whips, Relatives, and Sportstation, he celebrated multiple national championships, including seven with the Bobcats. His love for competition was matched only by his respect for the game and those who played it.

Paul’s officiating career spanned more than 40 years and reached remarkable heights. He officiated IHSA state championship events in football and basketball, including multiple state finals. In 2001, he reached the professional ranks in the NFL and later served for many years in the Arena Football League, officiating four Arena Bowl championship games. In softball, he earned national recognition, officiating ASA Major championship games ten times and receiving the prestigious National Indicator Award. He is uniquely honored with both that distinction and a plaque in the ASA Hall of Fame—a testament to his excellence and integrity.

Yet, to so many, Paul’s greatest legacy was not his accolades but his character. As a coach at Ridgewood High School and a teacher in Norridge Elementary School District, he shaped generations of young people. He taught discipline, accountability, teamwork, and perseverance. He pushed his athletes to become better than they believed possible, seeing potential in them before they saw it in themselves.

Paul is survived by his loving wife, Lura, and their children, Cody and Dakota. Together, they shared a life rooted in family, community, and service.

Norridge has lost a legend and a true class act. Coach Frerking’s lessons, leadership, and example will live on in the countless lives he touched. His impact will never be forgotten. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
